Boulder, Colo.-based Atkinson-Noland & Associates Inc. (ANA) is a pioneer in research and development for materials science and structural behavior in masonry structures. Founded in 1975 by University of Colorado professors James Noland and Richard Atkinson, ANA’s early focus was on research.

Spotlight: Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc.

In 1956, three professors from the Massachussetts Institute of Technology established their own engineering design and consulting firm – Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) – with the simple goals of earning the lasting trust of their clients, gaining the respect of their most capable peers, and furthering the standards of practice in all areas of their profession. To say they succeeded in their goals would be understating the matter.

Spotlight: Legat Architects

In a highly competitive industry – and at the center of the architectural universe, no less – it can be quite difficult for an upstart firm to create a brand. Like so many before and since, Joseph J. Legat set out to do just that in the Chicago area in 1964. The then-28-year-old established his firm under the conviction that “great architecture hinges on great relationships.” Though many who followed the same path have failed, Legat Architects has grown and thrived into a 60-person, international operation known widely for its innovative designs, particularly masonry structures.
