MASONRY STRONG Podcast, Episode 9 Recap: Kent Bounds, President of Brazos Masonry, Inc.

Words: Justin Stengel

In Episode 9 of the MASONRY STRONG Podcast, we dove into the incredible journey of Kent Bounds, a prominent figure in the masonry industry, whose path was shaped by his father, Mackie Bounds, and his early experiences in the family business.

Kent's story is both fascinating and inspiring, providing a glimpse into the hard work and determination that drive the masonry industry forward. Join us as we explore his insights, challenges, and the evolution of a company that's close to his heart.

From Childhood Drawings to Construction Blueprints

Kent's introduction to the masonry world was a journey that began in his childhood. His father, Mackie Bounds, started their company back in 1989. Growing up, Kent was often surrounded by blueprints and construction plans laid out on the living room floor.

While initially an innocent distraction, these moments became the foundation of his deep connection to the industry.

At the age of 12 or 13, Kent began working in the family business, even if that meant earning just 50 cents an hour—a memory that vividly captures the essence of his early labor. Despite his young age, he took pride in his earnings, even if they were modest.

Learning the Ropes: From Forklifts to College

Kent's journey in the masonry world began with hands-on experience in their shop. He learned about equipment, operated forklifts, and gradually transitioned into fieldwork. However, it wasn't long before he realized that the physically demanding work was not his true passion.

Kent pursued his education at a community college, working part-time as a project manager during his studies. This experience sparked his interest in project management, where he found himself involved in purchase and change orders, further deepening his understanding of the industry.

Taking the Reins: From Project Manager to President

In 2002, Kent faced a pivotal decision when several project managers left their company to start their own business. His father, Mackie, presented him with an opportunity: continue his studies for two more years, or dive headfirst into the business.

Kent chose the latter, stepping into the office and eventually taking on the role of project manager. Over the years, his dedication paid off. Seven to eight years ago, he became the president of Brazos Masonry, gradually becoming a part owner, and ensuring the continuity of his father's legacy.

Witnessing Growth and Transformation

During his tenure, Kent witnessed the incredible growth of Brazos Masonry. From humble beginnings with annual revenues of $12 to $13 million to a $66 million company operating throughout Texas, the company's evolution has been remarkable.

Kent fondly reflects on the technological transformation over the years:

Today, the company boasts over 500 employees, and the digital age has ushered in efficiency and precision. Their evolution is evident not just in the office but also in their approach to fieldwork, safety, and employee well-being.

A Commitment to Safety and Innovation

Safety has become a top priority at Brazos Masonry. Kent implemented significant changes, ensuring all employees wear matching vests and hard hats. He involves his team in decisions, allowing them to choose the best safety gear.

Safety isn't the only area where innovation takes center stage. Kent remains committed to embracing new technologies and ideas, constantly seeking ways to improve the workplace environment for both field and office teams.

A Legacy in Masonry Education and the MCAA

Kent's involvement with the Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA) has been instrumental in the growth of the organization. He has played a key role in the marketing committee, co-chairing efforts to expand membership.

The growth of the MCAA is a testament to the dedication of its members, with Kent highlighting the valuable networking and resources available to members.

Balancing Family and Passion

Outside the masonry world, Kent nurtures his passion for classic cars. Recently, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by acquiring a 1969 Camaro, blending modern engine performance with classic charm. This love for cars is shared with his family, providing cherished moments cruising around on weekends.

Kent's family life is equally fulfilling. His wife shares his love for travel, and as a family, they've explored destinations like Scotland, where Kent indulged in his other favorite pastime—golf. The historic golf courses of Scotland left a lasting impression:

Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future

Kent envisions a future where masonry continues to embrace technology and innovation, possibly through robotics and AI. The prospect of evolving from manual labor to advanced methods excites him.

He's already explored technologies like the Mule and exoskeletons, remaining open to new ideas and advancements.
