His interest led him to the University of Texas, known for its engineering programs, where he pursued structural engineering. This transition set Bob on a path toward masonry. While seeking assistantships at the University of Texas, he stumbled upon a research project sponsored by the National Concrete Masonry Association, offering a fellowship with financial benefits.

This accidental encounter with masonry through a research project turned out to be pivotal, steering Bob into the world of masonry, an industry he has been part of for over three decades.

From Curiosity to Career
Bob observed that masonry wasn't emphasized in engineering curricula. Many institutions don't focus on masonry as a building material. However, once he began working in the field, he discovered its versatility and significance.

35 Years of Industry Change
Reflecting on the industry's evolution, Bob highlights significant changes over the past 35 years. When he started with the National Concrete Masonry Association in 1990, small, family-owned businesses dominated the industry. Over time, these companies expanded, becoming larger entities with multiple plants, leading to increased sophistication and innovation.
Despite recurring challenges, such as raising awareness and breaking barriers, Bob advocates for innovation and enjoys observing industry developments.

The Role of Industry Associations
Bob has been involved with the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) since shortly after his graduation. He began as a research engineer, engaging in hands-on work, testing walls, and researching materials. The lab in Herndon, Virginia, has been central for industry research and assisting members with compliance and product development.

Bob advanced through several key roles, reflecting his commitment to the industry and willingness to embrace challenges.

One of Bob's major challenges was implementing the checkoff program, a decade-long process requiring significant investment. Once established, it provided new resources and visibility, positioning masonry to compete more effectively. Bob and his peers worked toward synergy between associations like the National Concrete Masonry Association and the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute, achieving significant restructuring milestones.
