MASONRY STRONG Podcast, Episode 38 Recap: Bob Thomas, CEO of the CMHA

Words: Justin Stengel

On this episode of the MASONRY STRONG Podcast, Justin got to talk with Bob Thomas about his vision with CMHA, how he sees it growing, and where he thinks this industry is heading in the future.

The Accidental Introduction to Masonry
Bob's path into the masonry industry was unplanned. During his time at North Carolina State University, he pursued civil engineering, laying the groundwork for his future. His interest led him to the University of Texas, known for its engineering programs, where he pursued structural engineering. This transition set Bob on a path toward masonry. While seeking assistantships at the University of Texas, he stumbled upon a research project sponsored by the National Concrete Masonry Association, offering a fellowship with financial benefits.

This accidental encounter with masonry through a research project turned out to be pivotal, steering Bob into the world of masonry, an industry he has been part of for over three decades.

From Curiosity to Career
Bob observed that masonry wasn't emphasized in engineering curricula. Many institutions don't focus on masonry as a building material. However, once he began working in the field, he discovered its versatility and significance.

35 Years of Industry Change
Reflecting on the industry's evolution, Bob highlights significant changes over the past 35 years. When he started with the National Concrete Masonry Association in 1990, small, family-owned businesses dominated the industry. Over time, these companies expanded, becoming larger entities with multiple plants, leading to increased sophistication and innovation.
Despite recurring challenges, such as raising awareness and breaking barriers, Bob advocates for innovation and enjoys observing industry developments.

The Role of Industry Associations
Bob has been involved with the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) since shortly after his graduation. He began as a research engineer, engaging in hands-on work, testing walls, and researching materials. The lab in Herndon, Virginia, has been central for industry research and assisting members with compliance and product development.

Bob advanced through several key roles, reflecting his commitment to the industry and willingness to embrace challenges.

Why Meetings and Trade Shows Matter
Industry events and annual meetings are vital for the masonry community. They provide more than networking opportunities; they are the community's heartbeat. Collaborating, exchanging ideas, and connecting with diverse individuals are crucial for keeping the industry vibrant. Bob emphasizes that these gatherings foster genuine friendships and a sense of community among members.

Welcoming the Next Generation
A significant aspect of these meetings is strategizing to attract new talent and ideas. Bob underscores engaging younger professionals and acknowledges their role in challenging the industry. The commitment to mentorship and leadership development ensures the industry remains dynamic and appealing to emerging leaders.

Bob’s Life Outside Work
Outside of work, Bob enjoys singing in a barbershop quartet, a passion as fulfilling as his engineering work. His love for music traces back to his "singing engineer" days. Additionally, Bob's family has ties to the masonry world, with his wife having worked in government affairs for the association. His children have also contributed to the industry, making it a family adventure.

Constant Evolution
One of Bob's major challenges was implementing the checkoff program, a decade-long process requiring significant investment. Once established, it provided new resources and visibility, positioning masonry to compete more effectively. Bob and his peers worked toward synergy between associations like the National Concrete Masonry Association and the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute, achieving significant restructuring milestones.

Change and Innovation: The Heart of Masonry
Attending trade shows like World of Concrete allows Bob to witness industry changes firsthand. While personal change may not be embraced, evolving industry trends are exciting and rewarding. Companies focus on service, new ideas, and solving traditional problems with innovative solutions. Challenges like building faster and efficiently, and supporting the labor force are opportunities for growth.

Recent Advances
The masonry industry is experiencing a technological boom with innovations like exoskeletons, carbon-absorbing materials, and robotics. These advancements aren't just about change for change's sake; they aim to make buildings safer, more efficiently constructed, and better for workers.

Looking Forward: Bob’s Passion For The Future
Bob's enthusiasm for the industry is fueled by its variety and energy. The absence of a strict routine, with new programs constantly emerging, keeps him engaged. Building relationships, being part of solutions, and facilitating the industry's next evolution are what drive him forward.

Where Is Masonry Heading?
Innovation remains at the forefront of the industry's future. Bob speaks of the need for faster construction and making the industry accessible to newcomers while valuing seasoned professionals' skills. Techniques like dry stack construction and new joining methods promise adaptability and efficiency. Bob remains optimistic about the industry's trajectory.

Bob’s Advice and Reflections
Bob's career is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of the masonry industry. It's not just about physical materials; it's about relationships, teamwork, and growth within the industry. Staying involved, collaborating, and welcoming new voices are key to driving the industry forward. Innovation continues to be a central pillar in advancing the craft and ensuring its future relevance.
